Extrusion: Where Multi-Layer Performance Begins


High-quality matte PPF film is usually produced on a five-layer feed-block + die line. Outer TPU layers deliver clarity and toughness, the core layer carries matting particles, and tie-layers promote inter-laminar adhesion. Melt-bank temperature must be maintained at 190 -205 ℃; any hotter and TPU depolymerises, leading to haze and reduced self-healing.

 

 

Surface Mattification: "Structured Scatter" Beats Simple Sand-Blast


Cheap films rely on post-calendar embossing, but premium manufacturers integrate in-line micro-emboss rollers (Ra ≈ 1 µm) plus matting powder inside the skin layer. The dual mechanism produces a deep satin that remains uniform after stretching around tight fenders-no glossy "shiny spots" on high-stress zones.

 

 

Multi-Functional Coating: The Soul of Matte PPF


A slot-die coating line lays down two critical layers in a single pass:
Top-coat (4-5 µm) – aliphatic TPU + nano-ceramic + fluorinated resin
Self-healing at 50–60 °C
Abrasion rating > 1,000 cycles Taber CS-10
Primer (1 µm) – promotes bonding without attacking the adhesive
Coating is done in a class 10,000 clean-room zone to avoid pinholes and fisheyes.

Lamination & PSA: Sticks On-Peels Clean
Matte PPF is laminated with optically clear acrylic PSA (180° peel > 7 N/25 mm) and a silicone release liner. A second PET "punch protection liner" can be added for pre-cut plotters. Cure is completed at 40 ℃for 48 h to minimise residual solvent.
