How To Install Paint Protection Film Correctly?

Paint Protection Film (PPF) is incredibly resilient. Once applied, it can seal off air from the car's paint and protect it for quite a long period of time. When the car is draped in this invisible cloak, it becomes armor. This shield acts like a barrier that resists the damaging of paint by stones, branches, bugs, and other on-road elements that happen to come into contact with the car. Especially when driving at high speeds or in bad weather conditions, PPF will reduce the impact of outside elements on the body so your car is safer.

But you know that the installation of PPF and the quality of PPF are in the same important position!

In this article, we will give the explanation of how to ask for paint protection film installation for better protection of your car.

Install Paint Protection Film

I. Preparation before installing paint protection film

A. Tools and Materials Preparation List

Before installing Paint Protection Film (PPF), making sure you have a full complement of tools and materials is key to success.

1. List of tools

(1) Clean and prepare tools

Car cleaner, High-quality car cleaner and car wash sponge or car wash mitt for thorough body cleaning.

Clay Strips, Used to remove tiny particles and impurities from car paint.

Isopropyl Alcohol (Alcohol), for surface degreasing and cleaning.

Clean microfiber towels, for wiping and drying body surfaces.

(2) Installation tools

Spray bottle, Filled with a soapy water solution (usually water and a few drops of mild soap) to help the film glide and minimize air bubbles.

Scraper, Used to level the protective film and remove air bubbles and excess liquid. It is recommended to use a squeegee with soft edges to avoid scratching the film or paint.

Hot Air Gun (optional), Used to heat and soften the protective film, making it easier to conform to body curves and removing stubborn air bubbles.

Sharp utility knife or cutter, Use to trim excess film. Make sure the blade is sharp for accurate trimming.

Installation Gloves, To avoid fingerprints on the film.

2. List of materials

Paint protection film

Pre-Cut Film: Pre-cut protective film kits to suit the model.

Rolls of film: If you are using rolls of film, they will need to be cut to fit.

Lubricant: Used for lubrication between the protective film and the bodywork, usually mixed with soapy water.

Protective Film Cleaner (optional): Some film manufacturers recommend the use of specific cleaners to ensure optimal adhesion.

Auxiliary materials: Water at room temperature, laminating agent or glue (if needed), light saline solution in a spray bottle (for wiping), tape for adhesive aid, paper towels or non-woven fabrics.

B. Vehicle preparation

Pre-painting check and pre-treatment, Since these would help rid the vehicle surface of dust, grease, etc., a proper and thorough preparation can be done. This way, the PPF will easily fit onto the vehicle surface to provide maximum protection for the vehicle to keep it always fresh and shiny.

1. Cleaning the bodywork

The car body is to be washed thoroughly with water, adding a good quality car cleaner that removes all surface dirt, grease, and contaminants. Wash the body using a sponge or car wash mitt, paying attention to wheels and underbody areas.

CLEANING OFF IMPURITIES: If there is some tough dirt or resin on the paint, then a professional paint cleaner may be used.

2. Surface decontamination

Use an automotive clay bar to remove small particles and dirt from the paint of your car. With a lubricant, use the clay bar to wipe over the surface of the car in order to make the surface smooth. This helps to ensure that the protective film fits properly.

3. Surface cleaning and degreasing

Wipe with Isopropyl Alcohol: The body surface should be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol to remove the residual grease and dirt. In this respect, the surface should be free of grease and be dry using a clean microfiber towel.

4. Checking on the condition of the paint

Check the paint for scratches, dents, or any other damage. If there are any damages to the paint, consider fixing it before the application of protection film.

C. Environmental requirements

1. Temperature control

Application temperature range: The optimum temperature range for most paint protection films in application lies between 15°C to 30°C or 59°F to 86°F. This is because at such temperatures, film materials and adhesives tend to work best.

Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Avoid mounting the film in extremely high or low temperatures. If it gets too hot, the film will get soft, which can be challenging to handle. If it gets too cold, the film becomes hardened and difficult to adapt to.

2. Humidity control

Right humidity is usually between 40% to 70%. If too high, the membrane will be sticky during installation and probably will not function well. If it is too low, the membrane might not stick at all.

Avoid high humidity: Placing the membrane in a high-humidity environment will result in water mist or bubbling on the surface of the membrane.

3. Clean working environment

Dustless environment: Installation environment should be dust-free. Because this dust and dirt may form air bubbles under the membrane or damage the adhesive properties.

Keep the bodywork/installation area out of direct sunlight:. Strong sunlight can make the paint or film of the vehicle too hot, and thus affect the adhesion and installation of the film.

4. Avoid wind and strong winds

Avoid wind: Strong winds or air can blow dust or dirt onto the membrane. It can affect the quality of the installation. If possible, try installation in a closed or partially closed area.

5. Safe and comfortable work place

Sufficient space: Especially for larger body parts, ensure there is adequate room to make this installation.

Find a comfortable working position: Choose a proper height and place for installation at which you can work comfortably for a considerable period.

II. Cut and Fit Installation of PPF

A. Measure the surface of the vehicle

Gather the equipment and consumables to perform the application. Using a measuring device, such as a tape measure, take measurements on the surface area of the vehicle to be covered. This would include the front, rear, and sides.

B. Cutting of protective film

1. Use pre-cut diaphragms

Check fit: Make sure the pre-cut protective film fits your car model. Often, pre-cut film sheets are already cut to fit different parts of the bodywork and only need to be simply adjusted.

2. Use rolls of film

Preliminary cutting: Using scissors, cut the roll of film to roughly fit the size and shape of the body. Leave enough edge for subsequent adjustments.

Precise cutting: Gently place the film on the car body, confirm the position and then use a sharp utility knife to cut precisely along the edge. Make sure the edge of the film is aligned with the edge of the car body to avoid leaving too much residual material.

C. Laminating protective film

1. Surface treatment

Spray soapy water: Spray a soapy water solution on the contact surfaces of the body and membrane. This helps the membrane slide into place and reduces the formation of air bubbles.

2. Positioning protective film

Gently place: Gently place the protective film on the car body, make sure the film is positioned correctly and try to avoid direct contact between the film and the car body to prevent adhesion.

3. Adjustment of position

Fine tuning position : Spray more soapy water on the surface of the membrane in order to adjust the position of the membrane. Use a squeegee to gently adjust the membrane so that it is perfectly aligned.

4. Remove air bubbles

Using a squeegee: Starting at the center of the membrane, use the squeegee to push air bubbles and excess liquid outward. Be sure to apply even pressure to avoid damaging the membrane.

Heat Handling (optional): If the film has stubborn bubbles or does not fit easily, the film can be lightly heated with a heat gun (low temperature setting) to make it softer and easier to handle.

D. Pruning and fine tuning

Use a sharp utility knife to trim the edges, so the film will fit into place with the shape of the car's body. Be careful not to cut into the paint.

Inspection and repair: Check each corner and edge of the film for any air bubbles or unevenness that may have been missed. If problems are found adjustments can be made using a squeegee and heat gun.

E. Curing and cleaning

Cure Time: Allow the protective film to air dry at room temperature. This can take a few hours, sometimes a full day. Meanwhile, avoid washing the car or letting it be exposed to extremely bad weather.

Gently wipe the surface of the membrane with a clean microfiber towel in order to remove residual liquid or dirt.

F. Maintenance and inspection

Periodic inspection: Check the condition of the membrane periodically for a few weeks after installation to make sure there are no lifting edges or air bubbles. In case problems are found, repair them promptly.

Avoid adverse environments: Avoid having the vehicle exposed to extreme hot or cold temperatures or bad weather immediately after installation.

III. Problems that may occur during PPF installation and options for dealing with them

A. Bubbles and blisters

1. Problem Description

During installation, air bubbles or blisters may appear underneath the protective film. These bubbles are usually caused by air or moisture and could affect the film's looks and performances.

2. Solution

Using a squeegee: Starting from the middle of the bubbles, progress with the squeegee pushing them and moisture to the edge of the film. If possible, dislodge as much as you can.

Heat Treatment:Using the low-temperature setting of the heat gun can be used to gently warm up the film, keeping it soft and allowing air bubbles to be expelled with much greater ease.

Small Hole Treatment: In the case of bubbles which refuse to go or are awkward to remove, one can attempt to make a very small hole in the centre of the bubble using a very fine needle or razor blade and then use a scraper to push the bubble out.

B. Protective film does not fit perfectly

1. Problem Description

The protective film may not fit perfectly on curved surfaces or edges of the body, leaving wrinkles or unevenness.

2. Solution

Heating and adjusting: The material will be heated, and with the help of a heat gun it will turn softer in order to easily fit. Fine adjustments, when heated, are made using a squeegee in order to perfectly fit the film on the curved surface of the car body.

Step-by-Step Lamination: In cases where the film is difficult to put on, it may be applied in sections, only small areas at a time for smooth fit.

C. Warped edges

1. Problem Description

Buckling or lifting of the edges may be noted. Incomplete compaction during installation or improper edge treatment could have led to the problem.

2. Solution

Recompact: The edges of the film may be re-compacted with a squeegee to ensure that the film is tightly stuck to the body of the vehicle.

Using a heat gun: Light heat may be applied to the warped edges to soften them and then take a squeegee and flatten the edges.

D. Cleaner residues

1. Problem Description

Soapy water or cleaner residues beneath the protective film or around its edges might influence the adhesiveness of the film.

2. Solution

Cleaning treatment: Upon completion of the membrane installation, excess moisture and detergent should be cleaned off from the membrane surface with a microfiber towel.

Use blotting paper: Blotting papers can thus be used to absorb much moisture under the film to help speed up the adhesion process.

E. Scratches or damage to the protective film

1. Problem Description

The protective film may be scratched or slightly damaged during installation.

2. Solution

Avoid excessive force: Avoid using excessive force when using tools to prevent scratching the film or paint.

REPAIRING SCRATCHES: Small scratches can be repaired by heating the film with a heat gun to make it softer and gently massaging the scratched area, which can sometimes reduce or repair minor damage.

F. Uneven adhesion of membranes

1. Problem Description

The protective film may not adhere evenly in some areas, resulting in localized loosening or blistering.

2. Solution

INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT: Inspect all areas of the film after installation. Any uneven adhesion found can be adjusted with a squeegee and heat gun to ensure an even fit.

Re-cleaning and re-laminating: For unevenly adhered areas, it may be necessary to re-clean the surface and re-laminate the film.

G. Change color or become opaque

1. Problem Description

Sometimes the installed film may show color change or opacity that affects the appearance.

2. Solution

Waiting to cure: Newly installed protective films may show color changes during the curing process, and the color and clarity of the film will usually return to normal after curing is complete.

Avoid chemical exposure: Avoid using strong acid or alkali cleaners to prevent effects on the membrane.

IV. Routine Care and Maintenance of PPF after Installation is Complete

A. Regular cleaning

Gentle Car Wash: Wash your car with a mild car wash detergent and water, avoiding detergents with strong acid or alkali ingredients. Use a soft-bristled brush or soft sponge to gently scrub the car body.

Avoid High Pressure Rinsing: High pressure water guns may cause damage to the membrane and should be avoided.

B. Drying and wiping

Dry with a soft towel: After cleaning, a clean microfiber should be used to gently dry the body in order to avoid marks or water sports from drips.

Avoid scratching: Coarse material on taping shall not be used when wiping in order not to scratch off the surface of the membrane.

C. Avoidance of strong chemicals

Avoid chemicals: Strong acids, alkalis, and solvent-based cleaners must not be used because such chemicals can actually destroy the surface of the protective film.

Protection against resin and bird droppings: If the vehicle is contaminated by resin or bird droppings, try to use warm water to clean as soon as possible to avoid damage to the membrane caused by long time residue.

D. Regular inspections

Check the film status: check the condition of protective film in regular intervals for edges, bubbles and other problems and treat the problem immediately.

Tackling Problems: Minuscule lifting edges and bubbles can be cheated by heating the film with a hot air gun and lightly pressing it to fit.

E. Avoiding extreme environments

Avoid Heat: Where possible, try to avoid letting your vehicle be exposed for any period of time to the intense sunlight or high temperatures, which could possibly cause overheating or discoloration of the film.

Protective film against extreme cold: Avoid exposing the vehicle in extreme cold, during winter months. Excessive cold can cause the film to become brittle.

F. Regular waxing and coating

Use suitable wax: You can use car wax suitable for the protective film for regular waxing to enhance the gloss and protective layer of the film.

Avoid products containing solvents: Select wax products that do not contain solvents to avoid damage to the membrane.

G. Avoiding physical damage

Watch out for scratches and bumps: Avoid scratches, bumps or hard impacts on the bodywork since it may damage the protective film.

Regular Maintenance: If scratches or membrane damage occurs, treatment or repairs should be applied without any delay.

H. Proper storage

Avoid prolonged outdoor exposure: Try parking the vehicle in a garage or a shaded area whenever possible to lessen the impact of UV rays and environmental pollution on the membrane.

Rain protection-without a garage: A car cover will protect your car and prevent rain erosion of the membrane.
